We hypothesize that the pattern of cyanobacterial dominance in experimentally enriched, low-carbon lakes is related not only to the resultant N:P ratio but also to the availability of carbon for gas-vesicle synthesis. We tested this hypothesis by determining the buoyancy responses of a highly gas-vacuolate, N2-fixing cyanobacterium to P enrichment with and without induced C limitation. Enrichment of samples of Aphanizomenon schindleri (Kling et al. 1994) from blooms in Lake 227 with combinations of C, N, and P produced rapid buoyancy reductions in P treatments, reductions that were reversed within a generation time in treatments that included C or C and N as well as P. These responses are the first of their kind to be observed in experiments with lake populations of cyano-bacteria. The rapid buoyancy reductions were associated with polyphosphate accumulations in P-treated A. schindleri. Differences in buoyancy status after one generation time were linked to differences in relative gas vacuolation between samples treated with P only and samples treated with C and N as well as P. These results may explain the relative success of different types of cyanobacteria in newly enriched, low-carbon lakes. The availability of C for gasvesicle synthesis may determine whether a low N:P ratio induces N2 fixation by benthic or by planktonic cyanobacteria and whether a high NP ratio leads to dominance by non-gas-vacuolate or by highly gas-vacuolate, non-N2-fixers.  相似文献

The essential oil of Juncus roemerianus was isolated by steam distillation with a yield of 0·01 % of the fresh grass. Analysis by combined GLC-MS gave evidence for the presence of 78 compounds. They included 13 benzene derivatives, 11 polycyclic (mostly naphthalene type) compounds, 8 cyclohexyl compounds, 32 acyclic compounds, 9 terpenoids, and 6 furan derivatives. In total, these compounds accounted for 46·6% of the oil. Due to the presence of tetrachlorobenzene and benzyl cyanide, other halogenated compounds and alkaloids can be anticipated.  相似文献

Nutritional ecology forms the interface between environmental variability and large herbivore behaviour, life history characteristics, and population dynamics. Forage conditions in arid and semi‐arid regions are driven by unpredictable spatial and temporal patterns in rainfall. Diet selection by herbivores should be directed towards overcoming the most pressing nutritional limitation (i.e. energy, protein [nitrogen, N], moisture) within the constraints imposed by temporal and spatial variability in forage conditions. We investigated the influence of precipitation‐induced shifts in forage nutritional quality and subsequent large herbivore responses across widely varying precipitation conditions in an arid environment. Specifically, we assessed seasonal changes in diet breadth and forage selection of adult female desert bighorn sheep Ovis canadensis mexicana in relation to potential nutritional limitations in forage N, moisture and energy content (as proxied by dry matter digestibility, DMD). Succulents were consistently high in moisture but low in N and grasses were low in N and moisture until the wet period. Nitrogen and moisture content of shrubs and forbs varied among seasons and climatic periods, whereas trees had consistently high N and moderate moisture levels. Shrubs, trees and succulents composed most of the seasonal sheep diets but had little variation in DMD. Across all seasons during drought and during summer with average precipitation, forages selected by sheep were higher in N and moisture than that of available forage. Differences in DMD between sheep diets and available forage were minor. Diet breadth was lowest during drought and increased with precipitation, reflecting a reliance on few key forage species during drought. Overall, forage selection was more strongly associated with N and moisture content than energy content. Our study demonstrates that unlike north‐temperate ungulates which are generally reported to be energy‐limited, N and moisture may be more nutritionally limiting for desert ungulates than digestible energy.  相似文献

Alpha taxonomy, and specifically the delimitation of species, is becoming increasingly objective and integrative. The use of coalescent-based methods applied to genetic data is providing new tools for the discovery and delimitation of species. Here, we use an integrative approach via a combination of discovery-based multivariate morphological analyses to detect potential new species. These potential species are then used as a priori species in hypothesis-driven validation analyses with genetic data. This research focuses on the harvestmen genus Sclerobunus found throughout the mountainous regions of western North America. Based on our analyses, we conduct a revision of Sclerobunus resulting in synonymy of Cyptobunus with Sclerobunus including transfer of S. cavicolens comb. nov. and elevation of both subspecies of S. ungulatus: S. ungulatus comb. nov. and S. madhousensis comb. nov., stat. nov. The three subspecies of S. robustus are elevated, S. robustus, S. glorietus stat. nov., and S. idahoensis stat. nov. Additionally, five new species of Sclerobunus are described from New Mexico and Colorado, including S. jemez sp. nov., S. klomax sp. nov., S. skywalkeri sp. nov., S. speoventus sp. nov., and S. steinmanni sp. nov. Several of the newly described species are single-cave endemics, and our findings suggest that further exploration of western North American cave habitats will likely yield additional new species.  相似文献

Habitat loss is one of largest threats to the persistence of large carnivore populations. However, because most large carnivores are long‐lived, cryptic and wide‐ranging, few studies examine the demographic consequences of habitat loss, and the resultant crowding that ensues, on these species. We used long‐term data to examine the demographic responses of an African lion (Panthera leo) population to flooding‐induced habitat loss in a seasonal wetland, the Okavango Delta, during a transition from low to high annual flooding patterns. We found that intraspecific competition reduced cub survival and that this effect was exacerbated by habitat loss and consequent crowding. The proportion of cubs recorded in the population also declined as crowding increased, and both the survival of cubs and proportion of cubs recorded declined as prey abundance decreased. Apparent sub‐adult survival declined with increasing pride size, but this likely reflects emigration rather than mortality. Adult survival remained relatively constant throughout the study period, a population response which is important in buffering populations against short‐term fluctuations in ecological conditions. As many large carnivore populations face future habitat loss, it is important that we understand the demographic consequences of habitat loss in order to better mitigate its effects in the future.  相似文献

A thiobarbituric acid (TBA) reaction for measuring lipid peroxidation products was evaluated for interference by several ingredients commonly used in solutions to prepare or analyze tissue homogenates or subcellular organelles. These included sucrose (up to 100 mm final concentration in the assay medium), Tris-maleate (up to 40 mm), imidazole (up to 20 mm), inorganic phosphate (up to 10 mm), and 4-morpholinepropanesulfonic acid (up to 20 mm). When the samples were heated at 95°C as recommended in some procedures, only sucrose significantly affected color development. Sucrose concentrations as low as 10 mm significantly increased absorbance at 532 nm of aqueous tetramethoxypropane (TMP) standards, and so the assay could not be applied reliably to tissue samples prepared in sucrose. Sucrose interference was only partially reduced by subsequent organic extraction (n-butanol plus pyridine), with measured absorbances remaining significantly greater (50–100%) than sucrose-free controls at sucrose concentrations of 20 mm or more. Modifying the assay to include sucrose in blanks and TMP standards failed to adequately correct for interference when the absorbance of unextracted (aqueous) solutions was measured. Further modification by adding sucrose to blanks and TMP standards, followed by butanolpyridine extraction, gave standard curves that were linear, through the origin, and had slopes equivalent to those of sucrose-free standards. This modification enabled almost complete recovery (average 2% error) of known amounts of TMP added to aliquots of tissue homogenates containing amounts of sucrose that otherwise significantly interfered. Also, with the modified method the content of TBA-reactive substances in tissues homogenized in sucrose was found to be not significantly different from that measured in tissues homogenized in a noninterfering substance, KCl.  相似文献
